CLIMB has been recognised in the annual HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards, presented digitally during the virtual 2020 International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC20) via HPCwire.com.

We were recognised with the Readers’ Best High Performance Computing Collaboration award for the role in supporting the COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) Consortium. CLIMB has provided computing infrastructure and bioinformatics analysis capability that has so far helped sequence over 100,000 virus genomes.

In April 2020, UKRI awarded £2million for the CLIMB follow-on project, CLIMB-BIG-DATA, to ensure the longer-term sustainable provision of the platform and maintain its position at the cutting edge of bioinformatics to combat infectious diseases and other challenges to global health. This meant that the CLIMB-BIG-DATA infrastructure was ready and able to support the response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

This combined with the exceptional talent and hard work of the CLIMB-COVID team and other COG-UK members has enabled COG-UK to build a national infrastructure for COVID-19 genomics virtually overnight, and has allowed us to analyse over 100,000 genomes linked with epidemiological data. CLIMB won two other HPCwire Readers’ Choice Awards in 2017 for “Best Use of HPC in Life Sciences” for Real-Time analysis of Zika genomes, supported by Lenovo, OpenStack, IBM, Red Hat and Dell EMC and for “Best HPC Collaboration (Academia/Government/Industry)” for CLIMB drawing on Lenovo, OpenStack, IBM Spectrum Scale, Red Hat, and DELL EMC to provide resources for projects that globally impact public health.
